Root staking pays a respectable 6 to 7% APY on TAO, but that number looks modest next to what subnet alpha tokens can generate for anyone willing to take on strategic risk.
High-quality subnets are yielding anywhere from 30% to well past 100% APY, and the right picks let you capture price appreciation on top of the yield.
The whole point is that raw APY means nothing without the fundamentals underneath it, since a bleeding alpha token can erase every point of yield it pays.
This article covers a staking-adjusted dashboard (AlphaChaser) built by Gordon Frayne to separate genuine yield winners from high-APY traps, and how the ranking is weighted to reveal subnets worth allocating to.
Root Staking Is the Floor, Not the Ceiling

The starting point for most people is root staking, where TAO staked to the root network earns a steady return. The numbers here are solid on their own:
- Root staking currently pays between 6 and 7% APY.
- That already outperforms yield on networks like Ethereum and Solana.
The real opportunity sits one layer up, in subnet alpha tokens where high-quality subnets like Minos can generate 80 to 100% APY while giving you exposure to the token’s price appreciation.
Why Raw APY Is a Trap Without Fundamentals

Chasing a subnet purely because it pays 200 or 300% APY is a fast way to lose money, since the yield often fails to offset how hard the alpha token is bleeding against TAO.
Staking yield works best as the secondary benefit of holding a fundamentally sound subnet, not the reason to hold it. That logic drives the dashboard’s two entry filters:
- Subnets must earn at least 50% APY to qualify for ranking.
- Subnets that underperformed TAO by -15% or worse over the past 30 days are excluded.
The exclusion rule matters because heavy underperformance against TAO usually means the APY is not compensating for the alpha token’s depreciation.
The Subnets Leading the Rankings Right Now
The dashboard is dynamic and updates daily, so any snapshot changes as subnets move up and down the board. At the time of recording, the standouts included:
- Minos (SN107), the top-scoring subnet, paying almost 100% APY, up 30% over 30 days, priced at 0.057 TAO with growing pool depth
- Actual (SN95), scoring around 53, paying 62% APY
- Thirty Spokes (SN99), a promising newcomer still marked unverified
Minos has been one of the best-performing subnets of the past month and has worked its way up to be a top emissions earner as well.
Yield Is the Cherry, Fundamentals Are the Cake
Earning thousands per month in the Bittensor ecosystem is realistic, but it comes from allocating to sound subnets first and treating yield as the reward for good selection.
A staking-adjusted approach protects you from the obvious trap of chasing the highest number on the board into a position that bleeds against TAO.
The rankings adjust daily, so it’s more rewarding if users track the dashboard in real-time. Build conviction in the underlying subnet, let the yield compound on top, and the cash flow follows.
