Subnet Summer and Medulla Labs have teamed up to build what they describe as Bittensor’s first democratised, honest validator, creating a model where the community can have a direct say in how validation decisions are made.

In Montreal, Subnet Summer and Medulla Labs explained how the partnership came together and why they believe Bittensor validation needs a different approach. Subnet Summer brings the community side, while Medulla Labs brings deep infrastructure experience.
It was explained that many important discussions already happen across Bittensor, especially around protocol changes and how the network should evolve. The problem is that these conversations do not always have a clear path into actual validation decisions. Their validator is designed to change that by adding a DAO where the community can vote on where attention should go.

The partnership also puts a strong focus on ‘honest validation.’ Validation was described as the work of checking outputs, finding exploits and making sure the right miners are rewarded. Weight copying already happens across Bittensor, but the team wants its own work to be strong enough that others can rely on it with confidence.
There is also the issue of scale. With many subnets to evaluate, validators do not always have enough time or resources to inspect everything deeply. Mistakes can happen and some teams may not get enough support. Subnet Summer and Medulla Labs want the validator to provide more value to subnets while giving stakers more influence over where resources are directed.
Education is part of that process too. Subnet Summer wants people to understand protocol changes and subnet developments before they vote. It is also working with Bitcast (SN93) to help people learn more about Bittensor, discuss what is happening and then take part in decisions through the DAO.
The validator is also being built around transparency. Votes can be recorded on-chain, while conflicts of interest are expected to be disclosed. The team would, reportedly, step away from decisions when necessary instead of participating where there could be a conflict.
For Subnet Summer, the project is built around a simple principle of democratising validation on Bittensor through the mantra, “Your stake, your decision.”
