404-GEN (SN17) rolled out an update to its Render Service, the piece that turns miners’ scene submissions into the visible renders judges see.

Before the fix, metallic objects like silver rings and chrome parts could show up as black silhouettes, meaning a strong submission might reach the voting stage looking like an unreadable blob.
The team added a new lighting mode that gives metallic objects proper light and reflection while keeping detail on bright surfaces intact.
What the Update Fixes
The changes cover areas of the Render Service miners work through every round.

1. Metallic materials render correctly now: Silver, chrome, and reflective surfaces show light and reflections properly instead of collapsing into black shapes.
2. Bright objects keep their detail: The new lighting mode prevents blowout on high-brightness elements.
3. Better protection against gaming: The renderer now blocks scenes from bypassing lighting or accessing off-limits properties during runtime.
4. Fairer judging overall: Fewer render failures mean voters see what miners built.

Most subnet updates focus on the models, but 404-GEN’s approach treats the infrastructure with equal weight, because a broken renderer can quietly waste even the best submission.
