NVIDIA’s Hugging Face Deal Raises Hardware-Neutrality Questions. Hippius Hub Is an Alternative

NVIDIA’s reported $12.9 billion acquisition of Hugging Face has raised a question within the open-source AI community: what happens when the company behind one of the world’s largest open-source AI hubs is also the dominant GPU manufacturer?

The deal has not changed how Hugging Face works today, and its software still supports hardware beyond NVIDIA. But it does introduce a new question around neutrality.

Hugging Face has historically served as common infrastructure for models from companies including Meta and Alibaba, regardless of where developers ultimately run them.

That makes alternatives worth considering right now, especially since the acquisition may come with some fine print.

One alternative is Hippius Hub, a model and container registry built around the idea that the registry should have no stake in the hardware underneath the workload.

Hippius Hub is compatible with the existing huggingface_hub workflow, meaning developers can migrate with a relatively small change rather than rebuilding their infrastructure from scratch.

Its registry also supports standard OCI containers, so the same infrastructure can handle both AI models and Docker-compatible images.

The bigger distinction is portability.

Hippius does not sell GPUs or operate an inference business, so it has no direct incentive for a model to run specifically on NVIDIA. You can always plug in AMD, CPUs, or other compute environments.

Public models and container images can also be pulled without an account, while the free tier can be used for hosting public models.

This fits into a broader direction Hippius has been taking. As we covered in The TAO Daily earlier, Hippius (SN75) has expanded from decentralized storage into confidential computing and the cloud infrastructure stack.

The NVIDIA-Hugging Face deal may ultimately change very little for developers. But for teams that care about keeping their AI infrastructure portable and hardware-neutral, Hippius Hub is now an alternative worth knowing about.
