How NIOME (SN55) Turned Genomic Data Into a $500k Revenue Subnet

NIOME (SN55) turns synthetic genomic data into a commercial pipeline, generating 4.1M datasets across 512 tasks and targeting $500k in projected annual recurring revenue.

How NIOME (SN55) Turned Genomic Data Into a $500k Revenue Subnet

At yesterday’s Yuma’s Subnet Spotlight, Aldo de Pape, founder of NIOME (SN55) and Genomes, talked extensively about SN55’s development.

Moving beyond synthetic genomics’ broader rationale, he revealed how NIOME separates infrastructure, subnet operations, and commercial opportunities.

Aldo described the broader mission around “safety, precision, and scale” while outlining SN55’s evolution beyond Genomes.

Aldo and co-founder, Mark Hahnel, previously worked around research-data infrastructure before building Genomes and later developing NIOME on Bittensor.

Genomes operates virtual vaults for individual genomic information, while SN55 receives synthetic datasets from external simulators and aggregators.

“That is a different source of validated simulators,” Aldo said, emphasizing that information from Genomes’s vaults never enters SN55.

SN55 In Numbers

Before synthetic datasets reach miners, NIOME’s lead bioinformatician checks incoming information and determines whether it can enter the subnet.

Miners then process validated datasets through challenges, creating curated outputs that can support artificial intelligence modeling and research.

Aldo said SN55 had generated 4.1 million relevant datasets across 512 tasks since the subnet became operational.

How NIOME (SN55) Works

NIOME (SN55) currently has 24 challenges planned, including sponsored challenges where companies can define research requirements alongside the subnet team.

Another commercial model gives companies licensed access to NIOME’s existing database, without commissioning an entirely new challenge.

A third model involves data partnerships, allowing biotechnology companies to synthesize existing datasets and process them through SN55.

Aldo said projected annual recurring revenue had reached around $500,000, while one potential contract could generate six figures.

That opportunity involves the United Kingdom government and focuses on specific bacterial genomic strains, although extensive approvals make execution slower.

NIOME (SN55) ultimately plans to reinvest commercial revenue into the subnet, potentially including buybacks that support continued network operation.
