Bittensor Gets Its First Credit Layer for Alpha as Mentat Lend Debuts with Score (SN44)

Mentat Lend opened the first credit market ever built on Bittensor, giving $TAO holders a way to earn above root staking rates and giving alpha holders a way to unlock $TAO liquidity without selling their positions.

The launch pool covers Score (SN44), with both sides of the market open from day one. Depositing $TAO earns extra APY over what root staking provides, and depositing $SN44 unlocks $TAO liquidity while the collateral stays staked and continues earning emissions.

The protocol runs natively on Bittensor’s EVM layer, prices collateral straight from the chain’s own AMM (Automated Market Maker), and has completed two rounds of independent auditing by Burra Security.

How the Market Serves Each Participant

Three distinct roles sit inside the protocol, each with a specific job.

1. Lenders deposit $TAO into a subnet pool: They earn interest on utilized capital plus root staking yield on idle capital, with the blended rate always sitting above pure root staking by design.

2. Borrowers post staked subnet alpha as collateral: They draw $TAO liquidity against it while the alpha continues earning subnet emissions and validator rewards.

3. Liquidators repay unhealthy debt and receive discounted alpha: A callback structure lets them execute liquidations without needing upfront capital.

Loans are open-ended with no maturity cliff, as interest accrues continuously and repayment happens on the borrower’s own schedule.

The Primitive Bittensor Was Missing

Under dTAO, staking already delivers equity and spot pricing. Credit is the final piece Mentat Lend brings.

The Missing Layer Mentat Lend Fills

1. Alpha holders previously had a binary choice: Keep the position or sell it, with no way to access liquidity while retaining the emissions.

2. Builders could not borrow against their equity: The infrastructure did not exist, even for teams with strong subnets.

3. Selling was not optional for operators: Subnet teams had to sell alpha to fund operations, applying continuous sell pressure regardless of product performance.

4. Credit had to be built as a layer above the AMM: Swaps settle instantly while loans persist until repaid, so the two primitives cannot share the same pool.

The Price Nobody Was Setting

Bittensor prices one kind of belief every block through alpha markets, but has never priced another kind that every developed financial system produces.

1. Equity conviction gets priced continuously: Buying alpha directs emissions to a subnet, making staking a capital-weighted vote on where emissions should go.

2. The rent of capital was never priced: No market on Bittensor answered what someone would pay to use $TAO they do not own.

3. APY does not answer this question: It represents emissions divided by stake, a distribution no one is paying.

4. Mentat Lend produces the missing price: Real lenders matched with real borrowers generate a rate carrying signal no other market on Bittensor produces.

What the Rates Reveal

Every rate the protocol produces breaks down into a network floor set slightly above root APY plus a spread reflecting the specific risk of the collateral.

What Birthed Market-Priced Risk Ranking

1. Allocation: A borrow rate is the rent of capital, and whoever borrows at 10% expects to earn more than 10% deploying that $TAO. The equilibrium rate becomes the network’s hurdle rate.

2. Translation: A high alpha APY says nothing about risk on its own. The borrow rate on the same subnet provides the missing information, with a low rate meaning market confidence and a high rate signaling expected depreciation.

3. Monitoring: Credit rates react faster than any other stress indicator in finance. One pool spiking is a local problem, while all pools spiking together is systemic stress.

A market-priced risk ranking emerges over time, as the rate hierarchy across pools becomes the first market-priced subnet risk ranking Bittensor has ever had.

Engineered for Subnet Alpha Specifically

Ethereum lending assumes an ERC-20 with deep external venues. Subnet alpha is a completely different asset, and Mentat Lend engineers its risk model from first principles for exactly that asset.

1. No external oracle exists in the design: Collateral is priced from Bittensor’s own runtime, which records each subnet’s price once per block before any transaction runs, making in-transaction manipulation impossible.

2. Valuation runs through the AMM curve: Collateral is never marked at price times quantity, so a position is worth what selling it into that pool would return.

3. Aggregate debt is capped against AMM depth: Every pool caps total debt against live pool depth, meaning no debt originates beyond what current depth can absorb.

4. Deregistration is a first-class settlement case: A dedicated forceClose flow settles positions pro-rata against the chain’s conversion proceeds.

5. Design heritage traces to Morpho Blue: Accounting, share math, fees, and liquidation derive from Morpho’s battle-tested primitive, diverging only where Bittensor’s mechanics require it.

The launch pool for Score (SN44) is live now. Both sides of the market are open, and what the protocol produces underneath is the first genuine credit market Bittensor has ever had, along with the first prices revealing the rent of capital across the network.
