Why Solana Just Opened the Floodgates to Bittensor’s AI Economy
Read Time:4 Minute, 37 Second

The Solana Foundation and Tao.com just brought $TAO natively to Solana, and the first 24 hours cleared millions of dollars in volume. The launch was anchored at Solana Accelerate USA in Miami, where Sunrise’s Saeed Badreg and Tao.com’s co-founder, Yoav Cohen, shared the stage to mark the moment.

In a sit-down following the event, Vibhu Norby, CPO (Chief Product Officer) of the Solana Foundation, hosted Garrett Oetken, co-founder of Tao.com and former CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of the Opentensor Foundation, to walk through what the launch actually is, why it was built, and where it goes next.

Highlights From the Conversation

The discussion ran from the mechanics of the launch through to the long-term thesis behind pairing Solana’s capital base with Bittensor’s AI economy. The points worth pulling out are below:

a. $TAO IS NOW NATIVE TO SOLANA: The launch went live during Solana Accelerate USA in Miami, anchored by an on-stage moment with Sunrise and Tao.com leadership and followed by millions of dollars of volume in the first 24 hours.

This is the first major distribution move for $TAO outside its home network, and the velocity of the opening print suggests the appetite was already there.

b. SOLANA WAS CHOSEN FOR ONE REASON: Garrett’s framing on ‘why Solana?’ was ‘capital efficiency.’ Solana has built the most efficient retail capital allocation engine in crypto, and pairing that engine with Bittensor’s AI economy is the cleanest way to bring serious flow into decentralized AI. The pairing is strategic, not opportunistic.

c. TAO.COM IS POSITIONING ITSELF AS THE GATEWAY INTO BITTENSOR: Garrett described Tao.com’s mission as making Bittensor a household name, starting with crypto-native users because that is where the existing fluency lives, then expanding outward into the broader tech and consumer worlds.

The Solana partnership is the first chapter of that distribution arc.

d. $TAO IS THE CLOSEST THING CRYPTO HAS TO A REAL AI EXPOSURE ASSET: Garrett’s closing point landed clean. Most people who feel they missed the AI boat have no real entry into the category: Buying Google stock is barely an AI play, and OpenAI and xAI are closed off.

$TAO is unique because it offers genuine exposure to the open AI economy, and Solana traders now have a direct path in.

OAK Research: How Bittensor’s Intelligence Architecture Works

e. BITTENSOR IS ECONOMIC INFRASTRUCTURE FOR PRODUCING INTELLIGENCE: For Solana users meeting the network for the first time, Garrett’s framing was deliberate. Bittensor is not just an AI project, it is a market of digital commodities optimized through incentives, where intelligence itself is the product being produced and traded.

To this ecosystem, $TAO is the settlement layer underneath that market.

f. SUBNETS ARE THE AI STACK MADE COMPETITIVE: Bittensor today runs 128 subnets, each one optimizing a different layer of the AI stack with its own $ALPHA token, its own miners, and its own (Automated Market Maker) AMM-based price connected to $TAO.

Solana users gaining exposure to TAO are gaining exposure to the entire underlying network of subnets through a single asset.

g. SEVERAL SUBNETS ARE ALREADY REVENUE-POSITIVE: Garrett confirmed that a meaningful number of subnets are generating real revenue and feeding it back into their own tokens through buybacks.

The flywheel between revenue, token value, and miner quality is already running on multiple subnets simultaneously, which is part of what makes the Solana entry point arrive at a useful moment rather than a speculative one.

h. THE COMPETITIVE DYNAMIC INSIDE BITTENSOR IS RIGOROUS. Miners that lose their edge sink fast, subnets that stop generating real interest see their emission share plummet, resulting in a network that is enforcing (not just optimizing!).

For a Solana audience used to evaluating capital allocation, this is the part of Bittensor most worth internalizing.

i. THE SOLANA FOUNDATION SHOULD ‘NOT LAUNCH A SUBNET JUST TO LAUNCH ONE:’ When Vibhu floated the idea on the call, Garrett pushed back directly. Subnets only succeed when they exist to solve a real problem that benefits from anonymous miner optimization.

The discipline behind that answer is part of why the launch reads as substantive rather than ceremonial.

j. THE TAO.COM APP IS THE RECOMMENDED ON-RAMP: Garrett’s practical close was to point new entrants toward the Tao.com app as the cleanest surface for browsing subnets, evaluating teams, and allocating capital without spelunking through GitHub.

The app is the consumer-grade entry point this entire partnership is designed to feed.

Why This Matters

The launch of $TAO on Solana is not just a token launch on a new chain, but rather a deliberate pairing of crypto’s most efficient retail capital engine with the most ambitious open AI network being built today.

Solana brings the capital, the liquidity, and the trader base. Bittensor brings the underlying AI economy and the only credible open alternative to closed labs. Tao.com sits between them as the consumer surface where that pairing actually becomes usable.

Over a million dollars cleared in the first 24 hours is a starting print (not a ceiling!). The Internet of AI is being built in public, and as of this week, the most accessible door into it runs through Solana.
