Why Hippius Drive Is a Better Alternative to iCloud and Dropbox

Cloud storage has become one of those expenses we stopped questioning.

Apple charges $9.99 a month for 2TB of iCloud+. Dropbox charges $11.99 for 2TB on a monthly plan. Google One sits at the same $9.99 mark.

The prices are close enough that consumers have simply accepted them as the cost of having files in the cloud.

At 2TB, the difference is $35.88 a year compared with iCloud and $59.88 compared with Dropbox’s monthly plan.

Over ten years, assuming prices never change, that’s roughly $840 with Hippius versus $1,200 with iCloud.

But price isn’t the most interesting part.

Storage shouldn’t require trusting the landlord

Hippius Drive encrypts files on your device before they are uploaded. The service does not hold a spare copy of your encryption key.

That changes the trust model.

With conventional cloud storage, you are ultimately trusting the provider with access to the infrastructure around your data. Hippius is designed so that the provider doesn’t need to be trusted with readable copies of your files in the first place.

For users storing sensitive documents, client files, business archives or other material they don’t want existing readable on a third-party service, that is a meaningful difference.

It is also the reason Hippius is more interesting than simply being “Dropbox, but cheaper.”

The bigger advantage appears above 2TB

The economics become more compelling as storage requirements grow.

Apple jumps from 2TB at $9.99 to 6TB at $29.99 and 12TB at $59.99. Hippius offers 10TB for $22 and 25TB for $50.

For photographers, agencies, video teams, developers, and businesses accumulating large archives, that difference adds up quickly.

At 25TB, Hippius costs $50 per month. Apple’s 12TB plan costs $59.99 and still provides less storage.

You don’t have to care that it’s Bittensor

Hippius runs its underlying storage infrastructure across independent operators using its Arion storage system. Files are broken into pieces using erasure coding and distributed across the network, without relying on a single traditional cloud provider’s data center.

The important part for a customer is the outcome. More storage, a different trust model, and lower prices at larger capacities.

Where Hippius still has work to do

We are not saying that Hippius has replaced iCloud or Dropbox overnight.

Apple still wins if what you want is seamless iPhone backups, Photos, Messages, Family Sharing, and the rest of the Apple ecosystem.

Dropbox has years of maturity, integrations, and enterprise workflows that a younger product can’t immediately reproduce.

Hippius is also still developing its consumer experience, particularly around mobile.

The better cloud isn’t necessarily the biggest one

There is a growing distinction between cloud services that happen to store your files and cloud storage that exists primarily to store your files.

If you need the former, iCloud and Dropbox remain excellent products.

If you simply need a large, private place for your files, Hippius makes a surprisingly strong case.

At $7 for 2TB, $22 for 10TB and $50 for 25TB, the pricing is aggressive. Client-side encryption makes the proposition more compelling. And unlike the major consumer clouds, Hippius is building its storage layer around a decentralized network without relying on a single corporate infrastructure.

You don’t need to leave Apple entirely.

Keep iCloud for your iPhone if it makes your life easier. Keep Dropbox if your team depends on it.

But for files and archives, it may be time to stop treating $10 a month as the unavoidable price of cloud storage.
