Most Bittensor miners compete with models, GPUs, or data pipelines, Vanta (SN8) puts trading strategies on the hot seat.
On the subnet, miners submit trading positions across various financial markets. Validators track those positions, and use the performance to determine miner rewards.
There is no GPU race here. The competition is between trading strategies, with TAO going to miners that can produce returns while keeping their portfolios within Vanta’s strict risk limits.
What Is Vanta?
Vanta (SN8) is a decentralized trading subnet where each miner chooses one asset class and submits directional signals through a lightweight API.

Validators execute the scoring process by tracking positions and incorporating spreads, carry fees, slippage, drawdowns, and other risk controls.
Vanta supports four markets, namely crypto, forex, equities, and commodities, creating a trading competition where miners are judged by portfolio performance, and not by the number of signals they send.
What You Need to Mine Vanta
The hardware requirement is modest because the miner primarily handles API requests and order submission. You need:
1. Linux machine or VPS.
2. 2 vCPUs and 8 GB RAM recommended.
3. Python 3.10.
4. Bittensor wallet.
5. TAO for subnet registration.
6. At least 300 Theta as collateral.
7. A trading strategy or signal source.
Theta is the SN8 alpha token used as collateral. Each Theta unlocks $500 of trading capacity, with collateral capped at 1,000 Theta.
Signals can come from a manual trading process, quantitative system, or machine-learning strategy.
How Vanta Mining Works
Once registered, the miner becomes the bridge between your strategy and the subnet.
1. Choose an asset class: Select crypto, forex, equities, or commodities during registration. The choice is permanent for that miner.
2. Deposit Theta: Your Theta collateral determines the trading capacity available to the account.
3. Run the miner: The Vanta miner exposes an API that accepts trading instructions from your strategy.
4. Send signals: Your system submits LONG, SHORT, or FLAT positions.
5. Let validators score them: Validators track the positions and calculate performance after accounting for trading costs and the network’s risk rules.
6. Earn weights: Eligible miners with stronger recent risk-adjusted performance receive higher weights and a larger share of TAO emissions.
The Risk Rules Matter
Vanta does not simply reward whoever produces the biggest PnL. Miners operate under intraday and end-of-day drawdown limits, while inactivity and strategy copying can also trigger elimination.
New miners must pass a challenge period before becoming established competitors.
An eliminated hotkey is permanently blacklisted, so returning to the subnet requires a fresh hotkey. That makes risk management part of the mining task itself. A strategy that generates returns but repeatedly breaches the network’s limits cannot remain in the competition.
How Vanta Rewards Miners
Vanta uses a debt-style scoring system built around recent trading performance. The scoring process considers PnL, risk, and rule violations before determining miner weights.
Reward cycles are organized around weekly periods, and only non-eliminated miners can receive weights.
In practical terms, a miner needs more than profitable trades. It needs a strategy that can produce returns while controlling drawdowns and maintaining consistent participation.
Test Before Going Mainnet
Vanta is built around live trading performance, so testing the infrastructure before committing collateral is important. The testnet uses netuid 116, giving miners a place to work through registration, API configuration, signal submission, and the scoring process before moving to mainnet.
Once the setup is working, the same basic workflow carries over to SN8 mainnet.
Vanta Turns Trading Into Mining
Vanta takes one of the most familiar forms of competition in finance, building a trading strategy, and plugs it directly into Bittensor’s incentive system.
You provide the signals. Vanta tracks the positions, applies its risk rules, and measures the results.
If the strategy performs well enough to remain eligible and earn strong weights, that performance can translate into TAO rewards.
For traders and quantitative builders, SN8 offers a way to compete on Bittensor without running a GPU miner, as the strategy itself is the mining edge.
