Bittensor v440 Restructures Emissions to Favor Demand Over Inactivity

Bittensor v440 upgrade restructures subnet emissions to reward real demand over inactivity, reducing idle rewards while directing more emissions to high-performing subnets.

Bittensor v440 Restructures Emissions to Favor Demand Over Inactivity

Spec 440 shipped a rewrite of how emission flows across Bittensor’s subnets, closing the era where every parked slot collected a slice of every block regardless of whether it’s providing any value.

The old model paid idle subnets enough to prop up the price of registering a new one, taxing exactly the builders the network wanted to attract.

The Former v. New Emissions System

The new emission gate keeps top-ranked subnets on essentially unchanged emission, while lower subnets see their share collapse toward almost nothing. Nothing gets hard-cut, but a parked slot now pays a trickle rather than a full share.

Why the Old Model Was Changed

Emission used to flow in direct proportion to subnet EMA price, which meant even the low-tier subnets on the network carried a guaranteed passive yield.

1. Every subnet earned something regardless of value: The tail diluted the head, and the network could not grow without taxing its best performers.

2. Idle yield kept slots expensive: Registration currently costs around 1,300 $TAO because passive carry made empty slots worth holding.

3. Builders got priced out: Teams the network most wanted to attract were the ones the pricing punished hardest.

The result rewarded existence over contribution, which is the opposite of what a proof-of-useful-work network should do.

How the New Gate Works

The emission gate introduces a threshold based on where real demand sits, rather than treating every subnet equally.

1. The bar sits where demand naturally concentrates: On the current network, that lands around rank 32.

2. Above the bar, emission stays essentially unchanged: Top subnets keep what they earn.

3. Below the bar, emission collapses: Deep tail keeps 1% to 5% of its previous share, and middle tail keeps 15% to 30%.

4. Nothing gets hard-zeroed: Every subnet still gets something, just not as much as before.

5. The bar moves with the network: If tail demand grows, the bar rises. If demand concentrates, the bar falls.

What the Numbers Look Like

The redistribution is significant when measured against the current 126-subnet network.

Where This Changes the Economics

The update rewrites what buying a subnet slot purchases.

1. Slots are now starting positions, not income streams. A team registering no longer walks in with guaranteed emission.

2. Registration cost should fall toward the transaction fee: The 1,300 $TAO price tag was propped up by idle yield. With the yield gone, the slot price should collapse.

3. Raising the subnet cap becomes feasible: Slots below the bar earn so little that adding more of them does not dilute the head.

4. Growth near the bar pays the best: The strongest reward curve on the network now sits at exactly the point where a subnet is about to cross from tail to head.

Owning a slot is no longer a passive investment, building a subnet people actually want is now the only viable route to earning on Bittensor.

A Fixed Constraint is No Longer Fixed

The v440 upgrade closes the loop on one of Bittensor’s oldest structural problems. Idle capital used to earn on the network’s back. Now it does not!

Subnets producing real demand keep their emissions and gain the share redistributed away from the tail, while subnets coasting on registration face the choice of building something people use or fading into the drip.

Node operators should wait for the on-chain spec version to reach 440, then update to the matching release.
