“What I Talk About When I Talk About Bittensor” – Siam, DSV Fund

What I’m Really Saying When I Talk About Bittensor

Been a gamer all my life. 4–6 hours a day of playing Rust is pretty normal. But on Valentine’s Day 2025, I found a new game.

Super hard, environment expands constantly and players range from absolute noob, to God-level magician-like. It’s a brutal PvP arena and the rewards are better than a normal job or business. So much so, that I completely dropped tools and dedicated every waking moment to this new game.

To the point I dream about it probably 4 nights a week.

This obsession is Bittensor, and the new mod Dynamic TAO is just epic.

I’ve become sort of an unpaid unofficial Jehovah’s Witness type evangelist for Bittensor since then lol. Anyone within a metre of me will no doubt find out about it.

Jokey analogy aside, mine, Mark Creaser and DSV Fund‘s job these days is to literally bring fresh eyeballs and participants into Bittensor. It’s great for them and also the ecosystem.

After speaking with 60+ subnet owners, loads of validators/miners, dozens of Family Offices, Funds of Funds, and many other potential investors over the last 6 months, I’ve learned a few things. Things which may seem obvious to some, but worth mentioning nonetheless:

1.) Don’t bother trying to talk and explain Bittensor.

It really is a futile endeavour. People don’t like to be told something, they like to DISCOVER things.

Bittensor is a treasure chest of personal mental discovery. New participants need that… and they’ll also stay for longer and treat it seriously once they’ve convinced THEMSELVES that it’s the future of AI and the evolution of what a business/company is.

Sprawl out all the desires of a company, convert them to incentive mechanisms and voila, you have a subnet. dTAO = future of capitalism.

2.) If you do talk about Bittensor, use analogies!

And lots of them!

I’ve split test dozens of different mental pictures and the best one by FAR is the Google analogy.

Google is the big umbrella entity (Alphabet) and under it there are hundreds of sub companies. Everything from YouTube to DeepMind to Google Maps. The gross value capture vessel for all the good or bad that Google does is their token GOOG.

Well, Bittensor is the same umbrella. Beneath it are sub companies called subnets etc etc and the value capture token is $TAO.

Please watch the video below for a better explanation and more analogies.

3.) Instead of TAO pilling people, subnet pill them.

It’s far more effective to just deeply learn about 5–10 really good and EASY TO UNDERSTAND SUBNETS. And wax lyrical about them.

Seriously folks, if you start talking about the amazing loss curves of distributed pre-training or hardcore AI stuff, the person you’re talking to will glaze over, get bored and make an excuse to go to the loo — just to escape from you!

Examples of easy to understand subnets to chat about would be:

  • World-leading cloud storage Hippius subnet
  • World-leading video compression Vidaio
  • The David and Goliath story of Ridges AI
  • World-leading weather forecasting Zeus Subnet
  • Super cheap compute: Lium, Chutes, Targon
  • World-leading AI deepfake detection BitMind
  • Properly novel drug discovery, Metanova
  • Or even casually mention the origin story of the ex-Google giga brain founder Const

4.) Spend no more than 15 seconds on each subnet.

DO NOT deep dive into a subnet unless the person you’re chatting with wants to.

You’re simply sprinkling them with hors d’oeuvres of awesomeness and one of those subnets will spark some interest.

Let the person you’re subnet pilling guide where the convo goes.

The desired outcome from this is that the person realises themselves that the only way it’s possible for all of these world-leading things to work is this magical thing behind them all called Bittensor.

For anyone open-minded or intellectually curious, they will go home and TAO pill themselves.

Remember this when you’re chatting with family and friends at Thanksgiving or Xmas.

This approach works especially well when chatting with potential Bittensor investors. Prospects don’t actually give a hoot about the tech.

They want to know if it’s going to make them money and the probability of doing so.

When they realise that the tech is cutting edge, it has all the pumpanomics of Crypto and the real-world business/VC element to it — it’s a no brainer.

So… hope this helps folks.

Go forth and not TAO pill, but subnet pill!

Get people wanting to buy the subnet and they will be forced to learn Bittensor in the process of buying that alpha.
