With constant developments, new projects, and volatile prices across Bittensor, choosing which subnet, from the 100+ pool of subnets, to invest in can be challenging.
Beyond price movements and staking yields, investors should consider five questions when evaluating a subnet’s long-term potential.
First, would customers pay for the subnet’s product without TAO emissions? Emissions incentivize miners, but sustainable businesses need real demand. Evidence of paying customers, product usage, revenue, and a clear path to profitability can help establish whether the subnet offers lasting value.
Second, what makes the subnet better than its competitors? Decentralization should offer a meaningful advantage over competing subnets or centralized alternatives. Investors should examine whether the product is faster, cheaper, or more effective, and whether that advantage can be maintained.
Third, can the team deliver? Relevant experience, consistent product development, and transparent communication are important indicators. A team’s track record, progress against its roadmap, and willingness to disclose performance figures can reveal more than ambitious promises.
Fourth, who is buying the alpha token, and who is selling? Miners, stakers, and subnet teams can create selling pressure, while staking demand, capital inflows, and revenue-funded buybacks may support demand. Monitoring large transactions and net TAO flows can help investors understand these dynamics.
Fifth, is there enough liquidity to enter and exit comfortably? Smaller liquidity pools can experience substantial price movements from relatively modest trades. Investors should check pool depth, estimated slippage, and potential price impact before committing capital.
Together, these questions provide a practical framework for assessing a subnet’s fundamentals and market risks. While no evaluation eliminates uncertainty, understanding product demand, competitiveness, execution, token flows, and liquidity can help investors make better-informed decisions.
